The rules on car tax or VED, Vehicle Excise Duty, as it is more properly known, are changing. The good news is that there is no change to the car tax regime on your current BMW, only on new cars bought from 1st April 2017. It’s especially important to beat the new car tax deadline if the new BMW you’re thinking about has a list price of over £40,000, as in year one, you’ll pay a rate based on the CO2 emissions, but after that you’ll pay based on the fuel type: £140 a year for petrol or diesel, £130 a year for alternative fuels, such as bioethanol, LPG and also hybrids, or there will be no charge for zero-emission cars, such as those that are all-electric. However, after the first year, you’ll also have to pay a £310 supplement for five years. These changes are all due to the way manufacturers, like BMW, have been so successful in reducing vehicle emissions over the past decade or so, meaning the government is now not getting in as much tax as it used to. But you can still beat the government’s tax regime by buying your new BMW now.
First year road tax after 1st April 2017
|CO2 emissions (g/km)||Petrol (TC48) and diesel cars (TC49)||Alternative fuel cars (TC59)|
|1 - 50||£10||£0|
|76 - 90||£100||£90|
|91 - 100||£120||£110|
|101 - 110||£140||£130|
|111 - 130||£160||£150|
|131 - 150||£200||£190|
|151 - 170||£500||£490|
|171 - 190||£800||£790|
|191 - 225||£1,200||£1,190|
|226 - 255||£1,700||£1,690|
After the first year, you will then pay:
|Electric vehicle||Alternative fuel||Petrol or diesel|
New vehicles that cost more than £40,000
If you purchase a new vehicle after 1st April 2017 with a list price (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000, you’ll pay the rate based on CO2 emissions. After the first 12 months, you’ll pay a rate based on the fuel the vehicle uses and an additional rate of £310 a year for the next 5 years.
|Fuel type||Standard annual rate||Additional rate||Total annual payment|
|Petrol or diesel||£140||£310||£450|
After 5 years, you’ll then pay the standard annual road tax rate.
