The new BMW M240i is here: new name; new heights in performance, efficiency and driving pleasure
The new name brings it in line with the 40i naming policy for all BMW’s straight-six-equipped models, and the more powerful compact coupé certainly has the performance to live up to its new title. Two tenths of a second have been shaved from the 0-62 sprint, to give the revised coupé a time of 4.6 seconds, while the convertible does the same discipline just a tenth of a second slower. Top speed remains limited to 155mph for both versions.
Powered by a revised version of the class-leading 3.0 litre straight-six, the new BMW M240i is available from Spire BMW now and it brings with it new levels of performance and efficiency. Benefitting from a power increase of 14hp and a torque increase of 50Nm, the headline figures for the model are 340hp and 500Nm respectively.
In line with BMW’s policy of continual efficiency improvements across its entire range of cars, there has been a decrease in fuel consumption of some seven per cent for the new M240i. This is thanks to the compact design of the Twin Scroll turbocharger, an electric waste-gate control, close-coupled catalytic converter, on-demand cooling pump, map-controlled oil pump, electronic power steering, Auto Stop Start and Brake Energy Regeneration. With such comprehensive fuel-saving technology, the M240i manages up to 36.2mpg combined with a manual transmission and up to 39.8mpg combined when equipped with the Sports Automatic, with respective CO2 figures of 179g/km and 163g/km. The convertible achieves up to 34.0mpg combined as a manual and up to 38.8mpg combined as an automatic, producing CO2 emissions of 189g/km and 169g/km respectively.
It’s not just the engine of the 2017 M240i that has come in for improvements, with one of the highlight updates coming to the six-speed manual transmissions in the form of an auto blip engagement control function. This blips the throttle on downshifts for smoother and sportier sounding down changes. The optional eight-speed Sport Automatic gearbox now has a wider spread of ratios to enhance efficiency and is capable of multiple downshifts for greater control for the driver. It also incorporates launch control with a predictive shift strategy, linked to the navigation system to ensure every ounce of performance is extracted when accelerating the car from a standing start.
Finally, a rev-linked vibration damper, aided by an acoustic shield beneath the bonnet, improves cabin refinement in terms of engine noise, as well as producing a more satisfying engine note – a hallmark of all sporting BMWs. The M240i is available now to order from us now.
