The new, seventh generation 5 Series is here, and it promises to be even more refined, advanced and satisfying to drive than ever
The new BMW 5 Series is almost here, and it looks set to be another incredible driving machine by BMW. Weighing up to 100kg less than its predecessor, yet stiffer than before, and benefiting from a lower centre of gravity and enhanced suspension arrangement, the new 5 Series will again provide the exceptional handling balance, composure and agility that all BMW’s are famed for. But, more than that, due to improvements in ride, noise insulation and driver assist technology, the new 5 Series will also be more comfortable and relaxing to drive. More sophisticated in every way, in other words.
Focusing on the construction of the new 5 Series, BMW has used its EfficientLightweight design philosophy to make it as light as possible, whilst also maximising the advantages of new chassis technology to improve the driving experience further still. Integral Active Steering four-wheel steer, xDrive four-wheel drive and adaptive suspension all contribute to a driving experience that will be peerless in its class, with sports car responses and luxury car comfort.
Featuring in the latest BMW Film the new 5 Series shows what it can do. Performance will be class-leading across the range as well, from the 190hp 520d ED that’s capable of 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds yet up to 72.4mpg combined, to the range-topping M550i xDrive with a 462hp, 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and 0-62mph time of just 4 seconds. The highly advanced hybrid 530e iPerformance will achieve up to 141.2mpg combined in ideal conditions, yet even the petrol 530i will provide up to 52.3mpg combined, despite its 252hp performance.

Comfort remains a 5 Series strong point, with the new model boasting more rear passenger legroom. Options include comfort seats operated by touch sensors with massage function, and the four-zone climate control will have ionisation and air fragrancing. The latest generation iDrive system is available with a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen, and can be controlled either by touch, iDrive controller, voice command or hand gestures. The projection of the Head-Up Display is over a 70 per cent larger, and includes more information than before. BMW’s excellent Connected Drive now boasts a Remote 3D View function, allowing drivers to call up a three-dimensional view around their car on their smartphone, no matter where they are.
There will be a vast suite of driver assist and safety features on the new 5 Series. Amongst other functions, they can actively help the driver to avoid collisions by applying steering corrections, and carry out all acceleration, braking and steering duties from standstill up to 130mph. Intelligent Auto Start Stop adjusts its responses to the route and traffic conditions, to make autonomous driving even smoother and more comfortable. The 5 Series won What Car? Car of the Year 2017, so take a look at the new BMW 5 Series reviews to see why the motoring press are impressed.
