As the all-electric cousin of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, the BMW i4 comes with multiple powertrain options. The entry-level eDrive40 Sport has a usable battery capacity of 80.4kWh and a 340hp rear-mounted electric motor setup that produces 430Nm. This model can do the 0-62mph sprint in just 5.7 seconds and the claimed driving range is 366 miles.

The top-spec i4 M50 version, on the other hand, comes with two electric motors - one fitted on each axle. It offers four-wheel drive and comes with 544hp and 795Nm on tap. This is a much quicker option, with the M50 reaching 0-62 mph in an impressive 3.8 seconds.

BMW i4 Practicality and Running Costs

Marketed as a four-door coupe, the BMW i4 balances style and practicality remarkably well. Roomy, good looking and with plenty of head and leg space up front, you’ll feel comfortable on short and long journeys alike. The rear is a little more cosy due to the sloping roofline, but there’s still plenty of legroom.

The boot is sizable too, offering 470 litres of luggage room with the back seats upright. Fold the seats down and this extends to 1,290 litres. The back seats also split 60:40 making it easier to carry long or awkwardly shaped items as cargo.

As for running costs, the i4 is relatively cheap to run. BMW states that all i4 models are capable of travelling more than 300 miles on a single charge, with the eDrive40 Sport version delivering the longest range at 365 miles. This means you’ll save money as charging is typically cheaper than fuel. Insurance premiums aren’t exactly low, but they are competitive, with models sitting in insurance groups between 34 and 36 on the 1-50 scale.

BMW i4 History

The i4 is relatively new to market and truly reflects the future of BMW motoring with its fully electric powertrain. The initial concept version, named BMW i Vision Dynamics, debuted at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show before being revealed in March 2021 and going on sale in November 2021. The BMW i4 became BMW’s first battery-electric variant by BMW’s motorsport (M) division.

Battery health & charge capacity

Each BMW i4 model has a different battery size and charging capacity, so ensure you know what you’re going for. For example, charging the BMW i4 M50 from zero to full will take around 13 hours using a 7.4 kW home charging point. At a 200kW DC rapid charging point, the BMW i4 M50 will charge from 10% - 80% in around 30 minutes.

Steering

If the steering wheel is hard to turn, feels heavy or is shaky, there might be an issue with the steering rack that needs to be investigated.
