The BMW M5 Saloon was launched with a tweaked 591bhp version of its predecessor’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine. This delivers a quiet, punchy and fun drive.

Go for the M5 Competition model, however, and you’ll get a track-focused engine delivering 616bhp and completing the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.3 seconds.

Dating back to 1985, the M5 saloon was first launched with a 280bhp 3.5-litre six engine and was a family-friendly saloon with an impressive sprint of 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds.

The second generation came in 1988 with a bigger engine and some fine-tuning for faster acceleration. This was followed in 1992 with an even racier model with a 3.8-litre engine capacity and adaptive suspension.

In 1998, the V8 was introduced followed by a V10 which won the Engine of the Year Award twice - in 2005 and 2010.

In 2011, the M5 premiered the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 and a four-wheel drive option came in 2017.

The Competition model came in 2018 followed by the all-powerful, range-topping CS in 2021.
