The BMW M5 Saloon was launched with a tweaked 591bhp version of its predecessor’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine. This delivers a quiet, punchy and fun drive.
Go for the M5 Competition model, however, and you’ll get a track-focused engine delivering 616bhp and completing the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.3 seconds.
The M5 range also includes the range-topping CS. This includes a V8 engine, fitted with optimised turbochargers.
A used BMW M5 Saloon might be a competitive athlete, but that doesn’t mean BMW has compromised on practicality. This car offers plenty of leg and headspace with particularly wide sports seats in the front.
To reduce the weight of this model and improve speed, the rear middle seat is missing in newer models. This is no great loss, however, as that seat was always a little tight and the interior feels roomier without it. The boot is perfect for weekends away or airport runs as it can hold a couple of suitcases with ease.
As for running costs, the M5 Saloon is a performance car and therefore not the cheapest on the market. However, you’ll shell out more for Competition and CS models. Both higher-end models deliver an average of 25mpg if you drive sensibly and don’t go full-throttle. Running the M5 as a company car will see high Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) payments.
As you’d expect from a high performer with the M badge, the interior is sporty, well-organised and oozing with style. Heavily bolstered sports seats instantly catch your eye as well as the bright red starter button which brings a racy vibe to the interior. The CS also gets an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, carbon-fibre gearshift paddles and carbon-fibre-backed bucket seats.
Technology is also a talking point with highlights including the Professional Multimedia system. This comes with a 12.3-inch widescreen and offers all the latest kit including sat-nab and smartphone integration in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a DAB radio, WiFi hotspot and a Diamond Surround Sound System on select models.
The M5 Saloon received the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. It’s packed with safety features such as Parking Assistant Plus for hassle-free manoeuvres as well as an intelligent Personal Assistant option for hands-free commands.
Dating back to 1985, the M5 saloon was first launched with a 280bhp 3.5-litre six engine and was a family-friendly saloon with an impressive sprint of 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds.
The second generation came in 1988 with a bigger engine and some fine-tuning for faster acceleration. This was followed in 1992 with an even racier model with a 3.8-litre engine capacity and adaptive suspension.
In 1998, the V8 was introduced followed by a V10 which won the Engine of the Year Award twice - in 2005 and 2010.
In 2011, the M5 premiered the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 and a four-wheel drive option came in 2017.
The Competition model came in 2018 followed by the all-powerful, range-topping CS in 2021.
There are several models to choose from within the BMW M5 range. Each boasts unique features, so here’s a rundown of what to expect.

Modern cars are packed with control, buttons and dials, so make sure you’re happy with the vehicle’s functions. Test the locks, electric windows and even the sat-nav and infotainment systems.
Ideally, your car should be fitted with Run Flat tyres. These will allow you to drive to safety if one of your wheels gets a puncture. Check the tyres for any signs of damage and ensure the tread is above the legal limit.
Damage can happen, so carry out a full vehicle inspection before signing any finance or purchasing agreement.
