Peugeot 3008 DKR latest

The 3008 DKR is Peugeot’s wild new Dakar challenger, which looks set to continue the success of its predecessor

Peugeot’s next Dakar Rally competitor, the 3008 DKR, has been revealed, and it has a lot to live up to: its predecessor won the 2016 edition of the famous event. However, the new model improves in every area over the 2008 DKR, so there’s every chance it could repeat that success. It would be another upset for the establishment, because the 3008 DKR remains true to Peugeot’s two-wheel drive roots, going against the grain of the establishment. Indeed, the 2008 DKR broke a 15-year streak of four-wheel drive victories, illustrating that it was just as capable with only two driven wheels.

Sebastien Criquet is Peugeot's senior exterior designer, and he has been responsible for the design of the aggressive 3008 DKR rally car and its road car equivalent. The Dakar car's dimensions and features are governed by technical rules laid down by the sport's governing body, but its inspiration is still very clear to see through a number of unique design cues. The front grille, headlights and ‘three claw’ rear lights are all very reminiscent of the 3008 road car, for instance.

It may have no mechanical similarities to its motorsport relative, but the road-going 3008 nevertheless possesses the same inherent qualities as the DKR. Reliability is an absolutely vital attribute of both vehicles, with Peugeot engineers relentless in their efforts to ensure their respective cars run faultlessly at all times. Similarly, great fuel economy is key to the success of both cars; here the 3008 crossover performs far better than its competition counterpart, with fuel economy of up to 68.9mpg combined possible.

It may have no mechanical similarities to its motorsport relative, but the road-going 3008 nevertheless possesses the same inherent qualities as the DKR. Driveability is also very important for both cars, from the easy delivery of their diesel engines to the comfort and convenience of their cabins. The 3008’s BlueHDI engine has been developed to deliver effortless performance, while its interior is relaxing and easy to use, and the raised driving positions of both cars provide a commanding view of the road – or desert – ahead. In their own way, clearly both vehicles are as successful as each other.
