The Peugeot Fractal is an electronic coupé concept featuring an exploration of automotive acoustics with the i-Cockpit
Revealed in 2010, first put into production in 2012 with the 208 and currently featured in the 308, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit has won over more than 1.8 million customers. The i-Cockpit is a distinguishing feature of the Peugeot range; it is renowned for enhancing the driving experience.
The Fractal aims to bring the i-Cockpit to a new level, “The Peugeot Fractal project explores new possibilities by further enhancing the cockpit experience through the use of sound,” says Jérôme Micheron, Peugeot Strategy Director. When using the navigation system, the synthesised voice appears to come from some distance in front of the car, as the vehicle travels the source of the voice shifts to whichever side of the cabin the driver needs to turn. Extensive research has shown this addition to the i-Cockpit creates a safer and more immersive driving experience, “The acoustic ergonomics enhance interaction with the Peugeot i-Cockpit and makes it easier to keep eyes on the road. The spatialisation of sound sources allows the driver to absorb and understand information more effectively and easily,” says Vincent Roussarie, New Acoustic Service Specialist.
The sound system used for this new i-Cockpit innovation aims to simulate the human ear achieved by the design of a 9.1.2 sound system and related software. The sound system compromises of three mid/high range speakers, two tweeters, two woofers and a subwoofer in the front and in the back, two mid-range speakers, two tweeters and a woofer.
